“Investigators are expected to share with other researchers, at no more than incremental cost and within a reasonable time, the primary data, samples, physical collections and other supporting materials created or gathered in the course of work under NSF grants. Grantees are expected to encourage and facilitate such sharing.”

Under NIH's current Data Sharing Policy, investigators are expected to:

• Include a data sharing plan in research proposals seeking $500,000 or more in direct costs describing how final research data will be shared. Alternatively, the investigator is expected to explain why data sharing is not possible.

Release and share the data, as described in the approved application, no later than the acceptance for publication of the main findings from the final dataset.

• Report any progress made on data sharing progress in the annual submission of their Research Progress Performance Report (RPPR).

New policy will be in place for those applying after Jan 25, 2023
Investigators are required to:

• Submit a Data Management and Sharing plan outlining how scientific data and any accompanying metadata will be managed and shared, taking into account any potential restrictions or limitations.
  
  
Comply with the Data Management and Sharing plan approved by the funding Institute or Center (IC).

NIH Genomic Data Sharing is required and enforced for large scale data such as GWAS, SNPs, genome sequence, transcriptomic, metagenomic, epigenomic, and gene expression. They require a Genomic Data Sharing plan, shared no later than date of publication.

"Proposals submitted or due on or after January 18, 2011, must include a supplementary document of no more than two pages labeled "Data Management Plan". This supplementary document should describe how the proposal will conform to NSF policy on the dissemination and sharing of research results. See PAPPG Chapter II.C.2.j for full policy implementation."

The NIH data management and sharing policy, effective Jan 25, 2023, requires a data management and sharing plan (DMSP) for all NIH proposals that will produce scientific data. Whenever possible, data should be shared in repositories, emphasizing real digital preservation and FAIR data. Researchers should begin planning their research now to ensure it will comply with and fulfill the NIH requirements.
