OPEN CALL FOR VOICES
In collaboration with Shame and Medicine—an international, interdisciplinary research project—we are creating an eight- to ten-part documentary storytelling series that explores how shame affects healthcare workers. The goals of this project are to define and characterize shame, awaken clinicians and patients to their personal experiences of both acute and chronic shame, and identify the institutional narratives that shape our collective behaviors related to shame. Critically, we aim to break the taboo of sharing healthcare professionals’ stories of being shamed in the workplace. Broader research on shame has found that acknowledging it and sharing personal experiences is therapeutic, diffusing shame’s power and creating a feeling of connection and a foundation for healing.
