“Skin, they say, renews itself, new cells replacing the old everywhere but in the brain—those burrowing, bruising memories are for a lifetime, forever hers to keep. When she slipped from her skin it stood there empty, just a husk, patiently waiting, though we both knew the future was no lure. It was love that always called her back, ensuring her return. And love—isn’t it a burden, heavier than a satchel slung over the shoulder carrying a thousand lifetimes, a thousand memories, a thousand skins?”
