What is an Academic Service Learning Course?

Academic Service Learning Course (AcSL)

  • - An AcSL course combines course content with meaningful, relevant service and critical reflection.
  • - Benefits: learning is enhanced, and community partners receive concrete benefits
    • - service learning v. community-based learning
      • - Kolb’s experiential learning theory:

Models of AcSL

  • - Project-based: Students produce a deliverable for community organization that functions as a “client” for students. Sometimes research oriented, other times takes the form of a concrete product.
  • - Placement-based: Students serve at the community organization as a volunteer.
  • - Education/Advocacy-based: Students share knowledge gained in their class with others in order to advance community understanding and mobilization on one or more key issues.
