A Guide to Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to play a major role in education, art, technology, and other areas. This guide provides information and resources about different types of AI.

Introduction: Text to Image With Adobe Firefly

Adobe has significantly expanded its use of AI in many of its programs. One of these programs that uses AI extensively is Firefly. Firefly is free to use, but you will be required to create a free account. At this time, and with a free account, you are limited to 25 images per month. Those with the Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions do not have the same limitations.

1. Go to Firefly at: https://firefly.adobe.com

2. Select the Text to Image Generate button under "Try these out."

3. Examples of what others have done are available to view.

4. In the Prompt box, type in your prompt. Remember the better you describe what you would like, the closer you will come to getting it.

5. Four example images will appear for what you have described. If you don't like the way it looks, you can modify your prompt.

6. On the right side you will see that you can choose the size of the aspect ratio of the images.

7.You can choose Photo or Art for content type.

8.Below those options you will see Effects. Select the "All" button to view all of your options. You may select more than one.

9. You may use a reference photo - either one of your own or one that is available from Firefly. The AI will generate the images based on the color scheme and style of the reference photo.

10.Be sure to use the "Clear style" button under the prompt to start with new selection.

11. Download any of the images you would like to keep.

12. Try it out and see what you can create with AI!

Remember that you will not always get quite what you want. AI applications can have what are sometimes referred to as hallucinations. These can end in unexpected results. In this example the prompt requested a Valentine's Day image of a couple sitting on a blanket under a tree having a picnic. Notice what is wrong with these images!

Example of Poor Results

Adobe Firefly: Examples of Prompts and Images

Here are some examples of Prompts that were used in Firefly and the image results.

Things to Consider:

  • Clarity in Descriptions: Provide clear and detailed textual descriptions in the prompts for generating images. The specificity and clarity of the input text influence the quality of AI-generated images.

  • Creative Exploration: Encourage creative exploration by experimenting with different prompts and textual inputs. AI can produce diverse visual outputs based on variations in language and context.

  • Evaluate Aesthetics: Assess the aesthetic qualities of AI-generated images. Consider factors such as composition, color balance, and visual appeal to ensure the generated visuals meet the desired standards.  Watch for AI "hallucinations" that may cause unintended results.

  • Iterative Refinement: Use an iterative approach to refine and improve generated images. Continuously analyze outputs, gather feedback, and adjust prompts to enhance the quality and relevance of the visuals.

These guidelines aim to foster AI's responsible and effective use in education, photo restoration, and text-to-image applications. It's crucial to balance technological advancements with ethical considerations, and user needs to maximize the positive impact of AI in these domains.
