Healing Conversations for the “Sick and Tired”

The University Libraries partnered with the Creighton Highlander team to undertake a grant-funded project to engage the North Omaha community on mental health. The title of the project, Healing Conversations for the “Sick and Tired,” was inspired by a quote by Fannie Lou Hamer, a legendary civil rights activist. Hamer famously stated that she was “sick and tired of being sick and tired,” referring to the impact of racism that she felt physically, mentally, spiritually, and politically. The project was designed to engage the North Omaha community in conversations about mental health and share reliable mental health information.

The project was guided by a community advisory board, whose members shared feedback which was used to program a series of virtual workshops. Workshops featured behavioral health specialists, educators, mental health practitioners, social workers, and community leaders. To support this project, the University Libraries provided a webpage with mental health information resources from reliable sources, including the National Library of Medicine. Karina Kletscher, one of Creighton University’s health sciences librarians, prepared a video demonstrating MedlinePlus, the National Library of Medicine’s consumer health database, and shared how the site can be used to locate mental health information.

This video is available along with recorded workshops, health information resources, and information about the project.
