Database Search Tips

To search something as a phrase, surround the terms in double quotations, like this:  "welfare state" or "privacy violations"

To search for forms of a word without doing multiple searches, use a truncation/stem function like this: lead*  The asterisk replaces 1-9 characters at the end of a word so your results will include LEAD, LEADS, LEADER, LEADERS, LEADING, LEADERSHIP. (In this example, the caveat is that LEAD has more than one meaning and pronunciation, so your result list COULD include material about lead poisoning, pencils, paint, or the chemical symbol Pb!)

Think about terms that may have similar meanings:

  • surveillance OR "electronic surveillance" OR monitoring
  • "electronic article surveillance systems" OR "retail security"
  • "right of privacy" OR email and privacy OR internet and privacy

Remember different databases will use different terminologies. These can be really evident in the database's THESAURUS or SUBJECT INDEX.

  • Consider the concept of bullying and how it may happen to employees
    • many authors use the phrase "workplace bullying" but the THESAURUS in Communication and Mass Media Complete uses the term "Bullying in the workplace"
    • Business Source Complete also uses "Bullying in the workplace" and further subdivides the category for articles specific to "Bullying in the workplace -- Law and legislation"
    • APA PsycInfo's Thesaurus simply uses "Bullying" but then shows scads of "related terms" and "narrower terms" to choose from
