Research Data Management: Home

What is Data Management?

Your funding agency may require that you submit a data management plan and archive your research data in a repository for long-term preservation and access.  This page points you to resources for determining funding agencies' data management policies, crafting a data management plan, and identifying an appropriate data repository.

General elements of a data management plan:

  • Description of data types or formats
  • Protocols and workflows to manage the data throughout the project
  • Documentation and metadata standards for your data
  • Policies for access & sharing, including any legal or ethical issues
  • Plans for storage, preservation, and long-term access
  • Allocating roles and responsibilities throughout the life of the data
