Avoiding plagiarism

We all know that putting your name on a paper you didn't write is stealing, specifically of the plagiarism variety. But how do you avoid plagiarism when you need to consult scholarly sources for an academic paper?

  • - When consulting sources, take notes in your own words and keep the citations with each note.
  • - Use quotes (and citations) when you can't paraphrase.
  • - To see a variety of perspectives on the same general topic, track down the citations that relevant articles use. It sounds counter-intuitive but having a few different ways of looking at a topic or idea can help you summarize in your own words. This is also a great way to find more sources!
