Journal Access Tips

We may have access to the journals through several of our subscriptions, so we recommend paying attention to which database will give you access to the volumes and issues (publication years/months/weeks/etc.) you're looking for. Ofttimes publishers place an embargo on the most recent issue(s) of publications, so our subscriptions may not include the most recent year or month, etc. that you're looking for. In our catalog, JaySearch, there will be a line below each database that carries the journal's issues which describe the access range. For example, the line may say "Available from 01/01/2016 until 12/31/2020," which means you will want to request any issue before 2016 or after 2020 through InterLibrary Loan or work with a librarian to help find the journal(s) and/or article(s).

Searching Diagnostic Tools & Instrumentation

Database:

Finding test copies:

Searching in APA PsycINFO (see database link in above box)

At the top of the page by the search boxes, change the search from the default to "TM Tests & Measures" in the Select a Field dropdown menu and enter a keyword for your research question or topic to identify studies that used a test with that word in its name
To find studies that used that test, enter the exact words of a test name into the search field
To find articles that put the test in an appendix, enter A:ppended" in a second search box with the "TM" dropdown selected

Searching Google

Enter the full name of the test you are interested in - we recommend placing it in quotations (e.g. "Functional Reach Test (FRT)"). If you find the test in full-text, be sure to contact the author for permission unless the web page clearly states the test is freely available.

Finding articles about tests or that utilized tests:

Searching in CINAHL (see database link in above box)

At the top of the page by the search boxes, change the search from the default to "IN Instrumentation" in the Select a Field dropdown menu and enter a keyword for your research question or topic to identify studies that used a test with that word in its name

Alternatively, enter the name of a test or key words about a test and then
limit the search to Primary Source for articles about test development and validation. Some of these may contain sample questions or the full test OR limit the search to Secondary Source for articles that used the test in a research study.

Searching in PubMed (see database link in above box)

Try using the following search strings to aid your search recall and precision:
Validation studies[publication type] AND (scale* OR instrument* OR assessment* OR measure* OR questionnaire* OR survey*) AND word for your topic
Validation studies[publication type] AND "name of a particular test in quotation marks"
